Radical Innovation, a community of design, development, and investment leaders, seeks out new ideas within the hotel space and help bring concepts to fruition. The 10th annual Radical Innovation Awards, organised by The John Hardy Group, concluded successfully earlier this week at the New Museum in New York City with some really out of the box ideas taking the stage.

The jury members came from leadership positions in some of the top hospitality brands and posed questions to test the feasibility of concepts for future development. After the votes of audience members, Driftscape by HOK’s Toronto office emerged to be the top choice winning USD 10,000 and other opportunities.

Driftscape has been designed as a way to provide immersive and heightened guest experience. It is a mobile, self-sustaining hotel comprising of modular units to accommodate guests and allow for untethered excursions of 2-3 days before returning to the amenity and service base.

Runner-up, Paris-based MM Architects Designers & Planners received a $5,000 prize for their concept Nesting, while the student winner, Juan Orduz of the University of Nevada Las Vegas was awarded $1,500 for his concept Space View Inn.

Nesting reimagines how we utilise urban parks and shared green spaces by forming partnership between private and public entities. It has a modular structure which is compact, light and allows for placement in a wide array of situations.

Space view inn, as the name suggests, builds upon the current space architecture standards. It has been conceptualised to support leisure and hospitality activity for up to 64 guests to make space travel a more inclusive experience when it is possible.

2015 winner, Zoku, opened their first property in Amsterdam this past May. While the hotels, as we know them right now, are working hard to boost customer experience, they are also supporting such platforms to look further into the future and be prepared when the time comes.
